Tested: Sumi pan asian kitchen and bar Munich

by amuc001

In 2020 I could try out the Sumi pan asian restaurant. The Sumi restaurant is located in Neuhausen district, west of the Old Town of Munich and therefore just a 10 minute subway ride from central station and additionally 10 minutes walking time. The Sumi restaurant offers „pan asian“ cuisine, which mixes asian cuisines (especially Vietnamese) with Sushi and curries. read on and see if the Sumi is a good option for your lunch or dinner while visitng Munich.
Note: I’m testing restaurants and bars in Munich myself (I pay for myself) and I’m not invited by the restaurants/bars. The reviews are therefore not a paid advertisement but honest opinions.

Location

The Sumi restaurant is located in Neuhausen district, a residential and quite wealthy district with lots of good restaurants.

The quarter around the Sumi restaurant consists mainly of residential buildings. It is a very safe quarter with picturesque buildings from the late 19th century. The district is crossed by the relatively wide Nymphenburger Straße. In a quieter side street, just one block from the Maillingerstraße subway station, you’ll find Sumi. Its proximity to the subway makes it ideally accessible by public transport.

Public Transport & Getting there

The Sumi is best reached by public transport. Especially by subway (subway line U1). The restaurant is only one block away from the subway station „Maillingerstraße“. From Munich’s main train station, it only takes about 10 minutes to get here by subway (without having to change trains). From Marienplatz (city center) it takes about 15-20 minutes, because you have to change trains to reach the subway line U1.

By car, you can also reach the Sumi quite easily, but the Neuhausen district is a residential area and the relatively old housing without underground garages forces residents to park their cars on the street. This regularly leads to the fact that it is very difficult to find a parking space around the Sumi. Some of the streets around the restaurant are resident-only parking streets. Everyone else gets a ticket or is even towed away. Therefore, I recommend you Munich visitors to travel by public transport. If you arrive by car, I recommend to try to get a parking space in the Nymphenburger Street. However, please do not try to park in a nearby supermarket parking lot (LIDL). This lot will be locked from 8 pm and you will not be able to get back to your car until the next morning.

Interior & Service

The Sumi is beautifully designed and the furnishings reflect the Asian culture. Also, semi-transparent curtains are often used to create additional privacy at the tables. This makes the restaurant look like you have many little nooks and crannies. Overall, it looks very romantic also due to the dimmed lighting. As soon as you enter the restaurant, you feel a pleasant – almost meditative calm and coziness.
When I visited the restaurant, I noticed the particularly friendly and attentive service team. I had reserved a table for two and was welcomed in the friendliest way and accompanied to the table. After a short time, the menu was handed to us and we were asked if we would like an aperitif or cocktail in advance. We accepted this offer and ordered a Mai Tai.

The Food

As the name suggests, Sumi Restaurant offers pan-Asian cuisine that combines many influences, especially Vietnamese cuisine and Japanese sushi. Additionally, flavors of European and American cuisine are included (e.g. guacamole or salsa roja).

In particular, a wide variety of sushi variations are offered. You can also find starters and salads from the Vietnamese cuisine.

The presentation of the dishes is also a highlight, because not only are the sushi rolls interestingly arranged, but also with special features, such as smoking liquid nitrogen.

I know classic sushi as well as Vietnamese food (of which I am a big fan) and was a bit skeptical at the beginning what it means to combine sushi with Vietnamese cuisine and international influences. However, I was not disappointed and found it really something new and fantastic in taste.

Pricing

The prices are relatively high, but you pay here not only for the sushi, which is generally relatively expensive, but also for the ambience, the service and the culinary journey of discovery.

What are your costs (including all taxes and fees, but excluding tips)?

Conclusion

If you want to try something new and are looking for a quiet, relaxed restaurant with Asian cuisine (especially sushi), I can only warmly recommend Sumi. Even if you are a traveler who is centrally located in the city center, you can get there quickly by subway.
Sumi is also worth a lunch, especially because it is located halfway to the Nymphenburg Palace. So you can feed your hunger either before or after visiting the palace.

However, I would not recommend the restaurant for families. Of course, the restaurant is family-friendly, but it has a quiet, cozy and somewhat sophisticated aura. Children are likely to find this boring and too quiet. Also, pan-Asian fusion cuisine is not necessarily what children like to eat in terms of taste.

However, especially for couples looking for a romantic dinner, I can fully recommend Sumi.

But it is worth making reservations in advance, especially on weekends.
